Description
Masala Uthappam is a traditional South Indian tiffin dish, known for its thick, soft texture and flavorful toppings. Originating from Tamil Nadu and widely popular in Karnataka and Andhra Pradesh, uthappam is made from the same fermented rice and urad dal batter used for dosa but cooked into a thicker, pancake-like form.
Masala Uthappam features a savory topping of spiced mashed potatoes, similar to masala dosa filling, often combined with sliced onions, green chilies, tomatoes, and coriander. It is cooked on a hot griddle until the base is golden and the top is slightly crisp, creating a balance of softness and crunch. It is typically served with coconut chutney, tomato chutney, or sambar.
This hearty and satisfying dish is commonly served for breakfast or dinner, and remains a staple in South Indian homes, restaurants, and street-side tiffin stalls across cities like Chennai, Coimbatore, and in diaspora hubs like Edmonton, Mississauga, and Surrey.
