Description
Tawa Grilled Chicken is a flavorful South Indian-style grilled dish prepared on a flat iron griddle known as a tawa. Popular in Tamil Nadu and Kerala street food culture, this dish offers a smoky, pan-seared alternative to tandoor-cooked chicken, often made at home or in small eateries without the need for a clay oven.
Boneless or bone-in chicken is marinated in a blend of yogurt, red chili powder, turmeric, black pepper, ginger-garlic paste, and lemon juice. After resting, the chicken is grilled on a hot tawa with a drizzle of oil, allowing it to develop a crispy, golden crust while remaining juicy inside. Curry leaves, slit green chilies, and sliced onions are often added toward the end for extra flavor and aroma.
Tawa Grilled Chicken is served as a standalone starter or as an accompaniment to rice or parotta. It remains a street food favorite in Madurai, Coimbatore, and Palakkad, and is also widely prepared in homes across diaspora communities in Mississauga, Edmonton, and Surrey.
