Description
Prawns Mulagittathu is a spicy and tangy seafood dish from Kerala’s coastal cuisine, traditionally prepared by Christian fishing communities in regions like Alappuzha and Ernakulam. The name “mulagittathu” refers to the liberal use of red chilies, which gives the dish its vibrant color and bold heat.
This preparation skips coconut and instead uses a base of shallots, garlic, ginger, tamarind, and roasted chili powder, giving it a thin, fiery gravy. Curry leaves and coconut oil add signature coastal notes, while prawns absorb the flavors quickly, making the dish intensely aromatic and deeply satisfying.
Often cooked in clay pots and served with Kerala matta rice or steamed tapioca, Prawns Mulagittathu is a staple in everyday meals and festive coastal spreads, especially in South Indian households across cities like Brampton, Edmonton, and Victoria.
