Description
South Indian Filter Coffee is a traditional brewed coffee made using a metal filter and a blend of dark roasted coffee beans, often mixed with chicory. Known locally as kaapi, this beverage is an integral part of everyday life in Tamil Nadu, Karnataka, and Kerala, often served in a dabara-tumbler set for a foamy, aromatic experience.
The preparation begins by brewing freshly ground coffee in a stainless steel filter, producing a strong decoction. This is mixed with hot, boiled milk and sweetened with sugar to taste. The coffee is then poured back and forth between two cups to create froth and enhance flavor. The use of full-fat milk and the distinctive chicory blend gives it a thick, rich texture and deep aroma.
South Indian Filter Coffee is served at homes, brahmin messes, roadside tea stalls, and high-end cafés across Chennai, Bengaluru, and Kochi, and remains a nostalgic and beloved beverage among South Indian families in Mississauga, Brampton, and Calgary.
