Description
Uzhunnu Vada is a traditional South Indian savory fritter made from black gram (urad dal), widely popular across Kerala and commonly enjoyed during breakfast or as an evening snack. Known for its crisp golden exterior and soft, fluffy interior, it holds a special place in festive meals, temple offerings, and everyday tiffin menus.
Prepared by soaking and grinding urad dal into a thick batter, the vada is seasoned with black pepper, curry leaves, chopped green chilies, ginger, and onions. Shaped into a doughnut form by hand and deep-fried until golden, Uzhunnu Vada is typically served hot with coconut chutney and sambar.
In Kerala homes and tea shops from Thiruvananthapuram to Kozhikode, Uzhunnu Vada is a symbol of comfort and tradition. It continues to be a favorite among Malayali communities in cities like Brampton, Calgary, and Scarborough.
