Description
Carrot Halwa, also known as Gajar ka Halwa, is a classic Indian dessert made by slow-cooking grated carrots in milk, sugar, and ghee, often garnished with cardamom, cashews, and raisins. While its roots trace back to North India, it has become a cherished sweet across South Indian households during festivals and special occasions.
In Tamil Nadu and Kerala, carrot halwa is commonly prepared at home during Diwali, Onam, or weddings. The dish is simmered patiently until the milk reduces and the carrots absorb the flavor, resulting in a rich, melt-in-the-mouth texture. The South Indian version may occasionally include coconut milk or a hint of saffron, depending on regional preference.
Carrot Halwa continues to be a festive favorite in home kitchens and sweet shops across Chennai, Coimbatore, and Kochi, as well as among Indian families in diaspora cities like Calgary, Scarborough, and Mississauga.
