Description
Sambar Idly is a comforting South Indian dish where soft, steamed idlis are soaked in hot, flavorful sambar made from toor dal, tamarind, vegetables, and a freshly ground spice mix. Commonly served in Tamil Nadu and Karnataka, this dish is a staple breakfast and tiffin item in homes, messes, and roadside eateries.
The idlis are made from fermented rice and urad dal batter, steamed until fluffy. The sambar is prepared with ingredients like drumstick, carrot, tomato, and brinjal, tempered with mustard seeds, curry leaves, and hing. When the hot sambar is poured over the idlis, they absorb the flavor, making each bite soft, spicy, and aromatic. A drizzle of ghee or a sprinkle of chopped coriander enhances the final dish.
Sambar Idly is widely enjoyed in cities like Chennai, Coimbatore, and Bengaluru, and continues to be a nostalgic comfort food among South Indian communities in Mississauga, Scarborough, and Edmonton.
